This is sorrow. This in no way defines us.
How can we be so careless?
The vision is calling, is piercing our hearts.
We cannot dwell here idle while this violence goes on.
Banished. Driven out of existence. A curse upon the earth.
Always under the banner of progress and feigned elevation.
Know that this culture will dissolve. It is the natural conclusion.
This cannot persist much longer.
One day we'll build upon the ruins of this dead world.

the pyre that's burning in the distance?
The wildness in our hearts.
The blazing torrent we're immersed in is failing, diminishing.
Blighted by corruption and consumed.
Down below this concrete prison, dying yet always enduring
remains a resistance to this endless cycle
of production, consumption and spiritual rape.
Tear down every last prison.
Open all cages and disrupt the current.
Bring down all institution. Rip up foundation
and love as you used to.

La mine, c'est le lieu qui met le plus en exergue les disparités sociales : d'un côté ils sont des milliers à descendre dans les entrailles de la terre, de l'autre une poignée s'élève socialement ; d'un côté ils meurent par centaines sous l'effet des coups de grisou, de l'autre ils consolident leurs richesses. Cette dualité, elle traverse aussi Kentucky : d'un côté le black metal atmosphérique asphyxiant, de l'autre l'americana et le folklore héroïque. Panopticon est dans la lutte permanente !

Le son des pieds qui s'enfoncent dans la neige, un black metal atmosphérique qui s'abat comme une tempête de grêle et tranche la peau, des violons polaires : Roads To The North est aussi glacial qu'un album de Paysage d'Hiver (surtout Schnee). En tout cas au début. Panopticon nous invite en fait moins à une méditation statique qu'à une randonnée, une ascension jusqu'aux sommets. On y accède à pieds en surpassant la douleur, en train en profitant du folklore. C'est un grand parcours initiatique.

Autumn Eternal apporte enfin la conclusion à la trilogie initiée avec Kentucky et elle ne pouvait en rêver d'une plus belle. La portion d'americana se réduit encore un peu plus, présente en majeure partie dans "Tamarack's Gold Return" et "The Wind's Farewell", car Panopticon se concentre sur le black metal atmosphérique. Capturant l'essence de l'automne, il est ardent, mélancolique, héroïque (cette batterie !), contemplatif. L'automne n'est pas une zone grise : c'est une tempête de couleurs !
